OUR HISTORY

On June 3, 1864, a bank organizational certificate was signed by nine area businessmen requesting authority to establish a bank, under provisions of the National Banking Act, to be known as The First National Bank of Greencastle, Pennsylvania. The business leaders who committed themselves to this proposal included - Samuel W. Prather, John Gilmore Rowe, Henry P. Prather, William Kreps, and Jacob Hostetter of Greencastle. Other signers were George Cook and Robert J. Boyd of Upton, while Adam B. Wingert and Charles W. Ruthrauff represented Antrim Township.

Banking operations began in rooms of a dwelling owned by William C. Kreps. This was on the west side of North Carlisle Street, two buildings beyond the lot where today's bank now stands.

In the meantime, the directors moved toward erecting a bank building. On December 16, 1868, a resolution was adopted to purchase land on the northwest corner of the public square. George W. Ziegler, whose general store was directly across the street, owned this site. Ziegler had purchased the property from Hamsher Clippinger, a tin and coppersmith, who had operated a shop there before and during the Civil War. The board of directors purchased from Ziegler a portion of the lot that was twenty-eight feet along Carlisle Street and forty feet facing Center Square. Mr. Ziegler received $3,000.00 for this piece of land, possibly the largest price for such a land parcel in the town's history at the time.

When The First National Bank of Greencastle was built, the bank occupied only the front half of the building on the square. In 1872, Greencastle's Town Clock, was erected on the roof and has marked the passage of time for all to the present day.

In March of 2009, Tower Bancorp, Inc., the holding company of The First National Bank of Greencastle and Graystone Financial Corp., the holding company of Graystone Bank (Graystone), entered into an Agreement and Plan of Merger between the two institutions. This partnership resulted in Tower Bancorp, Inc., becoming the holding company for Graystone Tower Bank. On March 31, 2009, The First National Bank of Greencastle changed its name to Tower Bank, a division of Graystone Tower Bank. The Bank operates branch locations in Franklin and Fulton Counties in Pennsylvania as well as Washington County, MD.
